Men genitals grooming

Grooming your pubic hair becoming more and more common this days, and perhaps you have also heard of it, maybe from your current girlfriend… so here is a nice article on this topic that I found on WikiHow and explains how to do it safely and get good outcomes.

How to Shave Your Genitals (Male)

from wikiHow – The How to Manual That You Can Edit

Bringing a sharp instrument close to your genitals can be intimidating; but with preparation, time, and practice, manscaping can be an easy task. You may want to shave the hair from your scotrum the first time in your bathroom, to remove the long hairs. This is described below. But afterwards, the easiest way to shave your scrotum on an ongoing basis is to do it when you are lying on your bed on your back. A double edge razor works real good. You should shave every few days this way. You do not need to use shaving cream.

Steps

  1. Buy a beard or hair trimmer and trim the pubic area to less than 1/4″. This will make the hair easier to shave later. Longer hair is more likely to clog a razor. Using a beard trimmer will work better than scissors and it will cut the hair shorter. If you use a clipper make sure you use a 00000 blade on it, if you do it will cut almost as close as a razor blade.

    • Avoid using an electric razor on the scrotum. The skin of the scrotum is so thin and loose that it can be caught by the shaver, and this is extremely painful. If for some reason you still feel you should use a men’s electric razor, avoid shaving down the center of the underside of the penis and on the center of the scrotum, as a cut there is also extremely painful.
  2. After you shave your long hair off your scrotum the first time in the bathroom, you can shave your scrotum more easily by lying on your bed on your back. But you will need to shave your scrotum frequently before the hairs get real long again. A double-edge razor works real good and you should not need to use shaving cream. If you think you always need to use shaving cream, then you will always have to shave your scrotum in the bathroom. But it’s a lot easier to lie down when shaving the scrotum, or do it while sitting down, works any way.
  3. Take a hot shower. This will soften the hair.
  4. Get in position. Ensure the room you are using for shaving will be private for at least an hour (or however long you think the process will take). This is not something you want to rush through! Consider shaving late at night.
    • Consider shaving sitting in a very shallow hot bath. The hot water in the bath will prepare the area for shaving better than showering. Your body will be very stable (you are sitting down) and your genitals are very accessible. You also have a handy source of water in which to rinse the razor. If this is not possible consider shaving sitting down, ideally on the floor for ease of access and stability.
    • If you use the edge of a toilet seat to sit on, letting your pubic area sit over a garbage can while shaving, the mess will be next to nothing to clean up.
    • If you prefer standing, try shaving in your shower. Just make sure to stand out of the water to avoid watering down your shave lather, and constantly rinse your blade. By shaving at the start of the shower, you will let any cuts close themselves and thus avoid any stains in your clothes.
  5. Lather the area with shaving cream intended for sensitive skin such as Coochie Cream. Avoid menthol or heavily scented creams as they will irritate the area. Using an antibacterial shaving gel will minimize irritation caused by bacteria getting into your pores and hair follicles. Also, these types of shave gels are clear, allowing you to see the terrain as you shave.
  6. Using a new 3 or 4 bladed razor, shave each area using short, very light strokes. The key in shaving the genital area is to always make sure the section of skin you’re shaving is taut; shaving loose skin can lead to cuts, because the skin will move with the razor and create an uneven surface. The following tips are for shaving against the direction of growth (“against the grain” – which produces the smoothest shave) but note that if you first shave in the direction the hair is growing, you will shorten most of it. Then shaving in the opposite direction will be easier, but some people find it sufficient to just shave in the direction of growth and stop there, especially since shaving against the grain is more likely to result in ingrown hairs and razor bumps.
  7. Pulling the penis downward, shave from the top of the penis upward to the navel.
  8. Holding the penis to the side, shave inwards in the sides of it and in the sides of the scrotum.
  9. Holding the penis upward, shave downwards carefully from the penis to the lower part of the scrotum.
  10. The scrotum is much easier to shave if the skin is extended. The scrotum should be shaved from the middle front part of it, to the sides, with extreme care.
  11. Rinse off and wash the area using mild soap.
  12. Pat dry. Be gentle. Rubbing with the towel will increase irritation.
  13. Use some antiseptic cream to minimize skin irritation. If you are shaving the first or second time it will most likely irritate the skin, once the hair starts growing back. This can lead to itching and redness. This will be gone within a week roughly and once you start shaving more often it will stop.

Tips

  • Rinse the razor between every stroke, and pull any of the long hairs out of it before continuing.
  • If you just glide over the skin without applying pressure you won’t cut yourself.
  • It is best to shave when the scrotum is ascended – meaning tight against the body. The piece of skin that goes between the shaft and the sack may be especially problematic. One thing you can do is take an ice cube into the shower and rub it on the scrotum to tighten things up. It can help get rid of that flap of skin between the shaft and the scrotum.
  • It may be easier to shave while the penis is erected, since the skin will be more extended and the penis is easier to handle.
  • Some people find that applying baby oil to the area immediately after shaving helps tremendously with the itch and irritation.
  • Apply baby powder to shaved areas that rub with each other, like the inner thighs, to minimize friction.
  • Some men do not shave all the hair off. Shave the penis and scrotum, trim the hair surrounding them up to the navel and on your behind, maybe also on the inner upper side of your legs. Then go ahead and trim the pubic hair up to the naval on the sides. One option is to leave a patch of hair just above your penis, similar to a “landing strip” on women.
  • The first few times it should be somewhat difficult and you could cut yourself. Don’t be alarmed, just clean well and eventually the skin will become accustomed and more resistant (and yourself, or the shaver, more experienced to avoid such situations).
  • If you plan on reusing the same blade, dry it completely after shaving. Allowing water to remain on your blade will promote corrosion and bacterial growth. Drying it will keep your blade sharp and clean for a long time. When it’s time to shave again, consider sterilizing the blade with a little rubbing alcohol and then rinsing with water before you begin.
  • Don’t do this assuming that your partner will enjoy it. Some people do not like hairless genitals, and might even be turned off.
  • Many men avoid using products like NAIR and other bikini area hair removal creams due to sensitivity of the scrotal area. If you do want to try it, however, test the hair removal cream on the inside of your elbow before applying to your private parts. Then test a small amount of the cream on your genitals before going all the way. When applying it, do not allow any of the cream to get on the head (if uncircumsized, you can try and pull your foreskin well over your glans).
  • Remember to clean up after yourself. Having others find stray shaven pubic hairs can be unpleasant for them and embarrassing for you.
  • Be sure to lather up and run a pumice stone over the shaved area to soften up the sharp edges of the hairs created by the razor blade. This will prevent it from becoming itchy when growing back.

Warnings

  • Never shave while inebriated as you will end up regretting all the cuts in the morning more than the hangover.
  • The itching, oh the itching! Once the hair starts to grow back it itches like crazy. You either have to shave again or put up with the itching. Once you have shaved a few times the skin becomes used to the treatment and usually the itching subsides.
  • Don’t shave before exercising. Not only will the sweat irritate the area, but the friction from running or other movement will irritate the area as well.
  • Salt on an open wound hurts, so too does sweat on a recently shaved scrotum. It’s a mild sting but be ready for it.
  • Watch for any painful bumps on your skin after shaving. This is probably an ingrown hair. It is nothing to worry about but should be examined by a doctor to prevent infection and to be sure it isn’t an STD.
  • If you get any cuts, avoid ANY sexual activity involving your genitals until the cuts are completely healed. If you or your partner have any sexually transmitted diseases or infections, it will likely get transmitted. Additionally, any kind of bacteria or virus (not just those associated with STDs) can infect the cuts. Even if you use a condom, it is likely to irritate the cuts, which can lead to scarring.
  • For itching you can use unscented (or scented if not available)will alleviate the itch (believe it or not it works great)
